Introduction Blog

Hi, I am Averey McDowell. I am a 5th year senior majoring in public relations and minoring in enterprise studies. I am from Dallas, TX and plan to more back there after graduation to be closer to my family. That is probably the most important thing to know about me, I love my family. My mom, dad, brother, and sister are my favorite people. We have so much fun together. I also have a 15-month-old niece who is actually the cutest baby in the world. I love her more than anything even though she is in a stage of hating me right now.
My niece Beckett when she was 7 months old.

My sister just got engaged 2 weeks ago in NYC. I am so excited and can’t wait to help plan. I also love to travel and cook. Traveling is my favorite thing to do and I have been lucky enough to visit some amazing places. Paris, Rome, Prague, Spain and the Caribbean are my favorite places I have been. I studied abroad that summer and got to visit so many amazing places. I studied in Erfurt, Germany and went completely by myself and without speaking a German. It was the greatest experience of my life. I would recommend it to anyone. I also love to cook and I am actually pretty good. My family and I love to cook together and talk and just have fun. My mom is probably my best friend. We get along so well and can have so much fun together. My dad is one of my favorite people too. He makes everyday and everything so fun. He is the funniest man I know. I also love to read but haven’t had much time lately due to school. After graduation in December, I plan to move back home to Dallas and live with my parents for a little but then me and my friend from school are going to move in together. I am really glad I have another semester and football season but am also looking forward to graduating.

My new friends and I on the Vltava River in Prague.

  1. Hi Averey! The reason I was drawn to introduction was initially because of your name! Hah, I know that may sound a bit strange, but you have a really cool spelling of your name! I also wanted to know the gender of the writer... *insert monkey covering its eyes emoji.* Beckett is adorable! I am glad you included a photo of her in this introductory blog post. Also, it is so cool that you have already had a chance to see so much of the world at such a young age. Your writing shows me that you are very energetic, and I can't wait to get to know you this semester!

  2. Hello Averey! Your niece looks so cute in that picture. Congrats to your sister on her engagement! It is great that you got to travel the world and enjoyed your trips. I wish I could some day travel around the world and enjoy the beautiful sites and food they have to offer. I wish you well for any future plans you have and hope to read your writings for this semester!

  3. Oh, your niece is a cutie, Averey! Hopefully in this class you will read some cool stories that you will remember and save so that you can tell them to her as she grows up. You can never have too many stories to dazzle and surprise little kids with.

And that picture of you in Prague is lovely: I used to live in Poland, but I never got to go to the Czech Republic (it was Czechoslovakia back then... that's how long it was, ha ha). There are some great Czech story collections online, so maybe that is a project you might want to explore, and there's a Czech unit that comes up in the UnTextbook later on too:
    Czech Folktales

I hope you will enjoy the class!

  4. Averey I am a sixth year senior so I definitely hear you when you say you are liking school, but ready to be done. I also agree that family is really important. I am planning to move to LA though in May. Its going to be crazy, but its what I want to do. Also, I have a ten month old niece named Isla Rose. Well keep up the good work and traveling. Its great getting to know you a little bit!

  5. Hey Averey! I’m also senior who will most likely be a senior next year as well. Congratulations on your sister’s engagement! I think its really cool that you have traveled the world and got see different cultures. I myself also traveled abroad once but only Spain, Netherlands, France and Italy. So I didn’t get to experience some of the countries you did. Keep up the good work!

  6. Hi Averey,
It is so cool that you’ve had the opportunity to travel so much! How was Paris? I am taking a trip with my friend over New Years, and we will be stopping off in Amsterdam, Paris, and London, so I am excited to hear about your experience there. Congrats on graduating in December! I’ll be graduating then too. Isn’t it crazy how fast it’s coming up?

  7. Hello Averey,
Wow, you have been to some very interesting places. I have been to Dallas once, what a lovely city. What a sweet little face your neice has, and how lucky is she to have an auntie wrapped around her pinky? I am close to my family too, it's a wonderful thing to be able to share life with people who love and cherish you as much as you do them. I am also a senior this year, but I think I was last year too, and I do believe I will be here again next fall, and then graduation as long as things go as planned. I transferred to OU is why I have had senior status without actually being a senior. It's weird knowing that all the school stuff and homework is almost over, just around the bend we can go back to reading books for fun, I look forward to that. Good luck this semester and in life, in all that you do!

  8. Hey Averey!

I’m from Dallas and the plan for me is to move back after graduation, too! I love being close to my family, also and I think that’s very important in life. Do you live in a suburb of Dallas? I’m from Flower Mound. Your niece is so adorable! Both of my sisters are pregnant right now so pretty soon I’ll be an aunt! Traveling is very important to me also and those places sound amazing! I’ve been to Germany, Paris, and Rome and you will love all of those places. It was great to hear about your life and I hope you have a great semester!

  9. Hi Averey!

I think it's really sweet that you want to move back to be with your family. Most people, the ones that I know at least, always want to get away from their family. It beats me as to why!
I am extremely jealous that you have been able to travel so many amazing places. Was it costly to make all those trips though?
Anyways, I hope you have a wonderful last semester and are able to get back to your family soon. :)

  10. It’s nice to meet you Averey. It’s so neat that you have traveled to so many different places. I’ve always wanted to go to Germany and Rome and its even cooler that you went to Germany without knowing the language but still did all right. Going from Dallas to Norman must have been kind of stressful for you but I’m glad you’re doing good and fixing to graduate. Hope you achieve everything you want in life and I hope to read more of your stories.

  11. Hi, Averey!

Your line about your baby niece hating you right now made me laugh so hard. My boyfriend has three nephews, and he is really close with the older two. The youngest isn't quite a year old yet, and he refuses to hold him--the first and only time he tried a couple of months ago, little Sawyer screamed his head off! Hahah. I also love the name Beckett! So precious.

You have been to some really awesome places! Being able to travel is one of my ultimate goals in life, but I really haven't gotten to do much of it yet. I've only been out of the country once. It's pretty awesome you went to Germany without knowing the language! I like your spirit.

Congratulations on graduating!! I hope you can finish out this last semester strong.

  12. Hello Averey,
It is nice to meet you! That is so exciting that you were able to study abroad in Germany and visit so many wonderful places. I studied abroad in Arezzo, Italy and was able to visit Rome, Florence, Pisa, and a beautiful place called Cinque Terre. Also, I just recently purchased my ticket to spend two months in Europe three days after graduation and I plan to backpack across western Europe and see all the great places you have mentioned. Any suggestions for things to see while in Germany?

  13. Hey, nice to meet you!

I am so jealous of all of your travels! I have never been outside of the US! What was your favorite place to visit?

Also, what an experience, to be in a country and not know the language (wow!) That shows a lot of bravery, in my opinion! I don't know if I could do that!

Your niece is so ADORABLE! I hope her "hate phase" ends soon! She is too cute to be mean!

I also love to cook (and also like to think I'm pretty good at it!) My favorite thing is baking though, probably because I love sweets. But when I do cook my favorite things to make are stir-fryes or asian noodle dishes. What is your favorite thing to cook?

  14. Hey Averey,

What an awesome experience you had traveling! I was lucky enough to study abroad in Spain two summers ago and loved every second! I didn't know Spanish that well and their accents made it harder, but it was still an awesome experience. Two of my roommates are from Dallas so I understand the struggle of moving to a small "city". Great to meet you and I look forward to reading some of your stories!

  15. Hello there Averey,

first of all, I do not think I have ever seen anyone spell their name like you. I love it, very pretty! Anyways, I loved reading your introduction. I liked your pictures and I think it's awesome how much you love your niece. I bet you are the best aunt! My sister is about to get engaged and I cannot wait to be an Aunt myself! Your traveling sounds amazing. I wish I didn't have to go to school and I could just travel the world. This summer I studied abroad in Italy. I did not get the chance to go to Germany but I really would like to some day.

  16. Hello Averey! It's so wonderful that you're so close to your family. So many people grow apart from their familiar in college, at least a lot of my friends did. It's so wonderful that you're still so close to yours! Also, it's really amazing that you've gotten to travel to so many places! I love to travel but I haven't gotten to go to so many completely different places like you have. I can't even begin to imagine what an amazing experience that had to be. My adventures in South Korea completely changed my perspective on life. I agree, everyone should try it at least once.

  17. Hello Avery,
Where in Dallas are you from? I am from Plano myself and I too plan to go back after I graduate. Your niece is so cute! My parents just went to Germany back in August and they loved it as well. Hope your sister’s wedding is coming along nicely. They can be so hectic so I am glad she has such a close family to rely on for help.

  18. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation Avery. I'm also graduating in December and I can hardly wait. I have to admit, your niece is pretty stinking cute. 15 months is a really fun age. It sounds like you have a really awesome relationship with your family and I'm glad you get to go home to them soon. I'm jealous of all the places you have traveled to. I also love to travel.

  19. Averey,
It is crazy to me that I have managed to not read your introduction before the final week of class! I thought surely I had seen everyone by this point. But regardless, I am glad to have gotten to your blog this semester! I really enjoyed reading through some of your stories this week. Congratulations of being so close to graduation and have fun in Dallas!

  20. Hi Averey!

Traveling is also one of my favorite things to do. I got to study abroad in Madrid, Spain this past summer and I had the time of my life. I wish I had gotten to go to Prague. Congrats on graduating soon!! I’m glad our football team has been doing so great cause it really is the icing on top of a great semester.

  21. Hi Avery.

We actually have several things in common! My favorite thing is also my family, and I love to travel although I haven't gotten to do much of it lately. I'm going to Italy for the spring semester and I am beyond excited. I don't know any Italian, but I am hoping that I will pick it up very quickly! I hope you make it through finals and all the projects the next couple weeks. And congrats on graduating!

  22. That is so cool that you went to Germany, even though you didn't speak the language. That is very adventurous!Kudos to you for just doing what you want to do despite the obstacles that would hold others back. I am jealous. Family is very important. It always warms my heart ( pardon the southern phrase) to hear that people are close to their families. I feel like a lot of people are age take their families for granted, and they shouldn't. Good luck the rest of the semester and congrats on graduating!

  23. Congrats on making it through your last semester and graduating; it's quite an accomplishment! I am so jealous of your travels. Getting to see so many different places must have been quite amazing. Going to a country not knowing the language must have been scary and exciting. How fast did you pick it up, I wonder? German being so close to English.

  24. Hey Averey! I was surprised to find someone that I hadn't met this semester! Your niece is absolutely adorable. I'm going to be a first-time uncle in January and I'm so excited. I'm impressed by your study abroad experience. I studied in London for a year, but your time abroad sounds much more difficult. It was good to get to know a little about you. I hope that the last couple of weeks in the semester go well for you!

  25. Hey Avery!
Wow I am so jealous that you have been able to travel to so many cool places. I spent this past summer in Italy and it definitely gave me the travel bug and now I want to travel all around the world. Congrats to your sister and your niece is super cute! It's so good to hear that you are so close to your family because I feel like that is something really important to have. Good luck to you when you graduate and I can't wait to read your stories!
